Flynn, Leontia
(1974- )
   Irish poet from Belfast, she has recently completed a Ph.D. at Queen's College, Belfast, on Medbh McGuckian (see entry). She was awarded an Eric Gregory Award in 2001, and her first collection, These Days (2004), was short listed for the Forward Prize Best First Collection. It also won the Felix Dennis Prize for Best First Collection in 2004; only two other female poets have won this category Kate Clanchy (1996) and Jane Duran (1995). These Days also won the Whitbread Prize in 2004. The Poetry Book Society included her in the 'Next Generation' poets. Three of her poems: "Atlantic Avenue," "Leaving Belfast," "Mangles."
